Admire Giotto's fresco “The Preaching of St. Francis to the Birds” in Assisi's Basilica Maggiore and then climb Mount Subasio to observe hawks, shrikes and larks. Visit the mountain wetlands of Colfiorito Park, where the song of the bittern can be heard in spring. A stop at Lake Alviano, an oasis of peace and nature on the road to Rome. Or observe birds stopping along migratory routes in Lake Trasimeno Regional Park.
Lake Trasimeno is the largest lake in central Italy and a very interesting place for birding and relaxing while eating an ice cream or drinking a beer on the shores of the lake. Lesser marangone, penduline and other species related to marsh environments are observed.
Assisi is an important religious and artistic center, everything revolves around the life St. Francis, depicted by Giotto in the beautiful frescoes in the Upper Basilica, among them is the famous sermon to the birds. After a visit to the city, we will explore the pastures of Mount Subasio with its scenic and ornithological wonders.
My passion fueled my curiosity and together with determination and respect for nature, I managed to become one of the first women to practice birdwatching professionally. I strongly believe in enhancing natural environments and I know how nature is everywhere around us, we just need to train our senses to be able to recognize it better. Would you like to go on a nature discovery trip with me?
Birdstories will be your safe space: diversity and inclusion are celebrated and no form of discrimination will ever be accepted or tolerated
Each itinerary can be customised to be accessible for everybody: this allows anyone to participate and enjoy the joy of a birding and a nature experience.
I personally know the itineraries, I propose and I create them to pass on all my love for the region, promoting places and people who care about the environment.
Ideal places for birding in Umbria range from the peaks of the Sibillini Mountains to mountain meadows that explode with lark songs, scents and colors in spring. From ancient forests, to lakes that count unique nature oases such as Lake Alviano and Lake Trasimeno. Without forgetting that Umbria is an ancient land, with medieval villages among the most beautiful in Italy, telling legends and hosting secret and spiritual places. Between nature, history, art and spirituality, Umbria is a must-see destination.
